Dealing with Gear

If you glance to the right of your screen, you'll see a spanking new Canadian Forest Industries Magazine cover, which means the complete new April/May digital issue is ready for your viewing - articles, editorial, ads, and all! Double click on the "page-flipping" icon at the top of this page, and you can read it all, a full week before your snail-mail colleagues. Content includes:

  • Fuel savings or black magic? Our log hauling expert reports on attempts to quantify the potential for fuel saving technologies that include everything from new on/off-road extra-wide tires (10% saving) to additive (big fat zero) and magnetic technology (3%).
  • Bigger can be better. Despite sky-high fuel costs, sometimes it still pays to go big, as the Toussaint brothers tell us. They bought one of the largest rubber tire harvesters on the market, and not only does it get fuel economy similar to its smaller predecessor, it gets a ton more production. It's all about cost per metre.
  • Community beetle battles. Western editor Jean Sorensen writes about the growing niche for small-scale logging in and around communities afflicted by the MPB, including Prince George and Banff.
  • Dealer Rules. Finally, our editorial touches on perhaps the most important relationship a logger can have after a solid marriage - the equipment dealer. Our 10 Rules for Selling me Gear is a half tongue-in-cheek look at what loggers can, and should expect from their local dealers.

Enjoy, and let me know what you think.
